Incremental - Flanagan & Harper's Favorite Word

That insidious little p.... Flanagan was pontificating on CBC about how he believes in the incremental approach in politics. In 2003 at the seventh annual Civitas conference in Toronto, Harper said movement towards their goal of moving Canada to the right must be "incremental," so the public won’t be spooked. So where is our erudite media and opposition in charting out Harper's apparently innocuous little baby steps toward his vision of a Stalinesque Canada? And if not them, where are the academics?

In December 2006 I blogged on Dismantling Canada's Institutions. If it was so obvious then to a mere part time blogger why is no one noticing? Can you imagine the list you could make now of Day's quiet and sometimes secret machinatons, the dismantling of any critical voice within government institutions, the selling off of canada's coporate strength, the propoganda war (did you notice the "blue" theme at the Olympics?) - surely there's a best seller in all of this. Did you catch the words "foreign investment" in the speech from the throne, can you translate that?

If the Liberals had allowed through their mismanagement a $58 billion deficit, the cons would be hammering away every day, frothing, ranting, hollering and all Ignatieff can say is that the Liberals will clean up the mess (like they always do). The cons gave away $10 billion annually in GST revenue - that's $30 billion so far, took an approximately $8 billion surplus and put it on the long-term debt, and passed a law requiring all future surpluses go on the long-term debt. Their economic stupidity caused the deficit. Lowest interest rates ever but the long-term debt is more important than people's livelihoods!

So let's look ahead if that's what Ignatieff wants to do - either way, the average Joe will suffer more as either the cons do a hatchet job on federal programs (their ideological intent anyway) or the Liberals do what? I know the Liberals don't want to reveal their plans (I am trusting they have some) because Mr. H. always steals them and calls them his own (because he doesn't know how to govern) but why not at least talk about increased revenue and not always cuts to spending - and I don't mean taxes - I mean a new way of looking at the economy, innovation - by the time this recession is over India and China will be even stronger and we'll still be thinking in the 20th century box.

When Chretien says something, everyone says "oh he promised not to say anything" but he speaks for a reason and he was on the mark in his recent comments about Canada's shrinking role in the world.

I'm going to have a go at a few posts that suggest to the Liberals (the ones I used to know and love at least) a few points they might want to make over and over again!! Why a $58 billion deficit??? One of two reasons: gross mismanagement or a massive ploy.

The cuts to the GST - unasked for and for all intents and purposes unwanted - are worth $10 billion a year. The cons have been in power for how long now - four years? That's $30 to $40 billion in lost revenue - that's most of our deficit. I would call that gross mismanagement of our economy - nothing to do with the recession!!

Or a massive ploy - create a deficit that can then be used as an excuse to eliminate all the good things the government has done for the citizens - create the famous smaller government, namely hand governing entirely over to big business.

Either way - is this the bunch we want running our country - into the ground?

Either harper and flaherty are fictionalizing the numbers so that they can keep cutting all the things to which they are idealogically opposed, or they are so flaming incompetent that they should be impeached (oh right we don't have impeachment - too bad).

I am assuming the expenses are not the problem since the infrastructure money is not exactly rolling out and they're stingy as hell with the EI and all they do is talk about manufacturing and the auto industry and they continue to cut arts and culture and many other areas. They did spend quite a bit on the banks in the beginning, but it seems to me it's the revenue side. They are 100% responsible for a least half of the problems there: cutting the GST, expensive tax cuts that are so small for the middle class you don't even notice them, on-going tax relieve to the big corporations and a failure to sell our oil to anyone else but their buddies to the south, and a complete reliance on the US as well as continuing regulatory amalgamation with that failing economy and don't forget the self-righteous snubbing of noses to China.

It is time for Canadians to wake up, but I've said that before.

We have a prime minister who simply takes a pot of the taxpayers money and heads off to another country, hiring Americans to help him learn better how to be Bush - where's the outrage? Did CTV realize they went too far with Duffy and now they won't give him a replacement?

And all this while dodo Finlay is incapable of running EI (just the way she screwed up student grants), layoffs continue in the tens of thousands, numbers of bankruptcies, personal and corporate, are out of sight, services are cut back, not-for-profits that help the unfortunate are struggling not to close their doors. But that's OK because the Fox interviewer is hanging on ego-man's every word.

And while Ignatieff's numbers rise, it's not because he's actually fighting for suffering Canadians, he's just not Harper. Everyone was surprised by the on-going dislike Canadians have of Mulroney, well just hold your breath when Canadians finally turn completely on Mr. H.

Alberta the New Economic Engine, I Hope Not

I have been thinking a lot lately about why it bothers me so much when people refer to Alberta as the new economic engine of Canada. I have realized there are two reasons for this: the first, the nature of the sources of the wealth; the second, what the province did or is doing with the wealth.

In the case of the first: the wealth in Alberta is resource based and the owners of those resource companies, primarily the oil companies, hold sway over the economics and politics, and therefore the lfestyle, of the people of the province, and more and more of the nation. When Ontario and Quebec dominated the economy, and I hope they rise again, the auto industry may have been prominent, but it was paralleled by a very diverse manufacturing sector, and while companies may have had a lot of economic and political influence, both the unions and the owners had political clout. As well, the overall economy was very diversified and this created a rich texture to the politics and the lifestyle of the people of Ontario and Quebec, and as a result, Canada. I also venture to say that a great deal more of the wealth remained in Canada when it was created in Ontario and Quebec.

The second: what the provinces are doing with the wealth. We know that the economic philosophy (I would call it ideology) of the Alberta government/oil companies has not so far included concern for the lifestyle of its citizens. The unparalleled wealth has not gone into affordable housing, accessible health care, excellence in education, well-maintained infrastructure; nor has it gone into quality of life institutions like those that innovate and inspire in the areas of arts, culture, heritage. They don't even seem to stand out in sports. And on the dark side, hard drugs and related gang activity have become an enormous problem, one which no one really seems to want to acknowledge.

On the other hand, when Ontario and Quebec held sway, we had the development of all our major cultural institutions, music, literature, history, theatre, opera, ballet, museums, art galleries, the film industry, great restaurants, a rich diversity of cultural sectors, large and small, excellence in education, innovative architecture, and a focus on affordable housing and infrastructure, and this spread to the rest of the country.

There is something about countries or regions with a strong arts, culture and heritage identity that gets under the skin of other countries and regions which focus primarily on money. Look at how the American oil types under Bush hate the French. You can see that with Alberta - the richness of these things under Ontario and Quebec's leadership stuck in the craw of Albertans and still does (I think this is why Harper has attacked the arts from day one). Through Ontario and Quebec, and to a lesser extent the Maritimes, Canada created its identity. Alberta is not offering us another one, nor is it adding to the richness of the one we have. Like Harper's passion to destroy the Liberal party, the Albertan zeitgeist seems simply to destroy that which makes them feel inadequate, the very essence of who we are as Canadians.

Harper's strategy is completely transparent: he's scared to death of the Coalition so he is trivializing the NDP and the Bloc, appealing to the ego of the Liberals, suckering the Liberals into "discussions" so that he can say he is working cooperatively and then he'll put out a budget that the Liberals will look stupid rejecting since he will have consulted them, and then, just like with the disastrous war in Afghanistan, the Liberals will have to wear it along with him. I will never watch CTV again, nor use their website - that bs with the interview was a result of mr. H.'s bought minions trolling for dirt and all they found was a poor interviewer. Actually this election has ended my life-long passion for politics on the media. I can't even enjoy Don Newman. They all fell so short it takes your breath away.

This election has taught me two things: if democracy is to work we need an election system that allows for the majority of Canadians to be heard in their government and we need a whole new network of communications. Perhaps the internet will be its base but it's hard to measure and too soon to tell.

How Is It Possible for the Media to Get Away with This?

Last night at 3:00 a.m. I couldn't sleep, so I got to watch Stephane Dion for half an hour. When I wanted to watch CBC Newsworld noon news today there was Harper for half an hour. Every time a media person mentions the Liberals, it is negative, negative, negative. If Harper wins the election it will be because the media was either bought or suffering longterm temporary insanity.

H.'s nasty people, his nasty nature, his complete fabrications (they have a good economic record!) all float by the media. Dion answered unscreened questions on any and all topics at UBC and not once was there disdain, smirky little smiles; instead there was rational considered thought on issues that matter very much to people and a vision for the future and hope for change for the better. Oh and no RCMP to keep people away from the candidate.

Harper believes in everything the current US government stands for - war, deregulation, disdain for the average citizen - and look where they are now and H. is trying to say that's the only way to go.

What is wrong with people, that they don't see it. How stupid does one have to be to think those involved in art and culture are a niche sector - really, really stupid. If the creative part of your brain is turned off, you get stupid, which is why Atom Negoyan is bloody brilliant and H. is not.

I tried to find an explicit connection for the diesel tax announcement but other than it being an obvious encouragement for his oil buddies who already own Canada's oil, I found little. Listeriosis outbreak takes place as cons move to harmonize their inspection system with those of the states. Arctic sovereignty, not about Canada but about the US and Russia - we have to defend the Arctic until the joint US and Canada defence system effectively controls the North American perimeter. Alberta-US pipeline security: create an international zone from one end of the pipeline to the other, eventually patrolled by security for hire.

The unemployment rate dipped to 6.1 per cent from 6.2 per cent the month before, but the data is well short of economists’ estimates, which called for a modest uptick in employment of 5,000 jobs.

“This was way worse than expected and there was hardly a silver lining in the data. It will bring forward expectations for a rate cut that the market has already priced in,” Buskas said, referring to an anticipated interest rate cut by the Bank of Canada.

BMO Capital Markets economist Jennifer Lee said: “Canada’s economy is clearly downshifting,” with July’s job losses combining with the 5,000 jobs lost in June for the worst two-month stretch since the 1991 recession.

“Anyone reading the newspapers has been aware of the flurry of plant closings and downsizing announcements, and Statistics Canada surveys are finally catching up with the reality,” CIBC World Markets economist Avery Shenfeld wrote in a research note.

Private-sector losses came from manufacturing, construction as well commercial and educational services.

"Over the past 12 months, manufacturing employment across Canada was down 88,000, with nearly all the losses in Ontario," the federal agency said.

Net employment in Quebec declined by 30,000 jobs in the month, pushing the unemployment rate up 0.2 per cent to 7.4 per cent. Ontario shed 19,000 jobs - all in full-time. It was the largest-ever monthly drop in manufacturing jobs in Canada’s most populous province, according to Lee."

In northern BC: Prince George, Terrace, Fort St. James - all communities flourishing until the Softwood Deal. Now: a major downturn in the softwood sector, people moving away in large numbers, houses for sale everywhere, rentals available everywhere and before long a downturn in the whole northern BC economy. Harper's always wanted to shrug off any connection with that culture "stuff" - he's so impatient for full power, he's trying to put his 'hidden agenda' into the next gear without a mandate. As someone quoted Dion, there's more culture in a bowl of yogurt than in the con party. But there's more to this: the programs he is cutting promote joint projects with European countries and we all know how the cons and their friends to the south can't stand those Europeans - because they're smarter, more peaceful and generally more democratic than the US!! Harper and his government (certainly not 'our' government) are also part of the gang that is trying to amalgamate the US and Canada 'by stealth', so all ties to Europe work against this plot. Charest understands this and he's trying to make sure the new North American regime does not include Quebec. I guess it's fitting that Buckler, the information control freak, leaves with no information about why she's leaving. So far I 've read that: she had been ill; that she had family priorities. Between the lines there are suggestions that she and Giorno, the 'new Brodie' were maybe not compatible, or that she and Brodie were a team so to speak, so they are leaving together. There are some suggestions that Harper is shifting his MO (I sure hope it doesn't mean we are going to see more of him).

But the most compelling reason I read in a comment on a blog is that the lobbying rules in the Accountability Act are set to kick in and that people are leaving now so they can become lobbyists right away - makes sense, change Canadian lobbying so it's more like those guys to the south - another way of trying to institute american style politics in Canada (could well have Mr. H.'s blessing).

Several of Fortier's people are leaving too - are they going to become lobbyists as well, or is Fortier just setting up to be Mr. H's Quebec man, now Bernier is gone?

Where is Don Newman when you need him - he'd have some interesting speculation - maybe Wells or Kady will enlighten?

I still can't believe what I saw: Craig Oliver taking on Sandra Buckler on 'Question Period' - it was brilliant. She sent a formal complaint on a blackberry I guess during the show that they had not accepted Jason Kenny as her replacement for the finance minister or the minister of the environment (who had been invited on the show to discuss the Liberal green shift plan). Craig pointed out quite firmly that they did not want to interview the minister of multi-culturalism and that ms. buckler was not the producer of 'queston period'. A forceful and commendable delivery on his part!

Oh he just did: "You're all getting "screwed" - isn't that priministerial. So the reason Harper surrounds himself with sycophantic pitbulls, (rather toothless ones really though), is to live vicariously through them. Periodically, however, as yesterday, his hulk side explodes, and to mix many metaphors, out spews the venom. And all he was reacting to was some genuine democracy! Interesting that he followed that with a military announcement - maybe that helps him feel all-powerful again.

It blows me away that the cons are awailing about gas prices after a carbon tax when they and their oil baron cronies are the ones responsible for the current obscene gas prices. Those of us that have an overwhelming distaste for everything for which the current federal government stands have been deprived yet again of the opportunity to send them packing and to have Canada return to its rightful place in our hearts and in the world. I see Dion's position , however. He was ready to go long ago and was beset by nervous nellies who now all seem to have had a shot of testosterone. If they didn't want to go when the initial horror at Harper was at its strongest, the Liberals should go when they can tell the Canadian people clearly and in detail how their government will reshape our future.

People have not talked nearly enough about how much Liberal thinking has been co-opted by the current government. Dion choosing the carbon tax on which to make a stand was very savvy because there is no way that Harper will steal that idea. And Harper is going to look a bloody fool hiding from the Canadian people in his bunker, surrounded by his scheming minions and spewing out pathetic little attack ads.

My only concern is that he will hide there, after proroguing Parliament until the fixed election date in 2009. Hopefully he can't legally do that.

There is a theory out there that Mr. H. is trying to deflect attention away from something by re-igniting a debate on Cadman, which on appearance is silly because clearly they were up to something with Mr. Cadman. That means then that what they are covering up must be even worse than the alleged bribery. I return to the recent Star articles and my previous posts on Naftagate. Obama has just won the Democratic leadership - if Mr. H. wants to continue to try and interfere in Americans' choice of their next president, maybe he doesn't want the direct role the PMO already appears to have played in the election process of another country to become a major issue. I must say I am very surprised that the Star stories have not received more play.

Check out Sensenbrenner (the Naftagate Leak) and you find out how deep the no longer secret agenda goes. Apparently a close friend of Mr. Day, Sensenbrenner, as the Star reported yesterday, is the son of Wisconsin Republican Congressman James Sensenbrenner known as a right-wing right-winger in the heart of the fundamentalist Christian world - well there you go guys: no, Harper and his minions have no secret agenda!!

It gets better - rather worse - Gerry Chipeur, who introduced Sensenbrenner to the embassy officials leads one to the Christian Legal Fellowship (CLF), to which Stockwell Day and to my horror Senator David Smith are connected.

The leader of a leading western democracy uses sensitive confidential information, provided to him only in his capacity as a leader representing a nation, to interfere in the election process of another democracy - surely this is both a crime on the international stage and a crime against the people of Canada. Mr. H. is an ideologue and, as for all ideologues, the end justifies the means, and for all their lily white self-professed virtues, it's all cunning, expediency, lies and cover ups. It would seem this ideology, while framing itself as a paragon of democracy, actually has as its goal,the end of democracy. What then is Mr. H's ideal world?

From Guergis to Harper the party line has been Mexico has its own system of justice - now Martin's ex-boss has stated (probably to no one's surprise) that those involved are holding Martin for ransom, that they have failed to get the required bribe, like the one that worked in his case. So if the PMO has so much respect for the Mexican justice system, why don't they just pay the $500,000 and get her out of jail - since that's the way the system works. By the time all Mr. H.'s minions have visited Mexico, with the attendant costs, they'll have spent that amount anyway.

Or, they could have the guts to call Mexico on its blatant corruption and abuse of its international agreements and start showing some muscle - right, they don't have any, well maybe just enough to attempt to bully fellow Canadians.

Obviously not. Everyone on the MSM had it right today - he wants to try and get McGuinty to take the heat for the disasters in Ontario caused in part by federal economic policy.
