Some Attitudes Towards Senate Rather Irresponsible
I was shocked at Craig Oliver yesterday when, with a sweep of his hand, he dismissed the Senate, claiming it should be abolished. I am surprised too at the NDP who are quite emotional and categorical about their denunciation of the Senate. This is part of our government; it is in our constitution. You don't just play around with a total package, picking away at this and that.
If these people are serious, why don't they explain exactly what it is they dislike so intensely and - very importantly - how the expect to keep the balance currently provided by the Senate. And don't give me that b.s. that it costs $50 million a year - a drop in the bucket when you look at Harper's spending sprees.
Since Harper hasn't been successful so far at neutering the Senate, like he did with Environment Canada, maybe he could privatize it - how's that, a privatized Senate, just like the bozos now replacing the bureaucracy at HRDC?
I cannot escape the conclusion that Harper hates Canada and everything it stands for. He wants every branch and every person who "defies" him to be taken away in handcuffs. He won't be happy until Canada's destroyed or absorbed into the US. The question is are the likes of Craig Oliver and the NDP of the same mind?

I don't believe that the Senate should be abolished, but it could be reformed in order to play a more relevant role in government.
Having elections for Senators will make them more accountable to the constituents of the Provinces that they are representing.
If Senate elections are out of the question, then there should at least be term limits that should be agreed upon by all parties.
Craig won't offer an opinion because he, like so many like him, don't know how to replace the Senate. Steve on the other hand wants it to be like the US Senate but he doesn't know how to get there.....other than, apparently, sedition.
Maybe they should all ask Tom Flannagan. He seems to be doing much of Harper's thinking for him? Hey! Maybe we can make a trade; Flannagan for Cheyney! Lord knows Cheyney's close to being run out of town on a rail...or croaking from another heart attack.....and since Dick tells George how to run the country, he could get our own fumble-bum going. As for Flannagan, I couldn't think of a more deserving country for him than the USA. Then even if Cheyney doesn't work out for us, not to worry cause he is on deaths door step as it is and won't likely be around long enough to bother us much.
Anonymous, I have to say I agree with you - maybe Flanagan could just move back to the US and take his boy H. with him. Then we could go back to being Canadian again.
As for electing Senators, Tony, I like the balance between elected and appointed. Unelected Senators can consider issues without having to worry about attack ads, media spin and weekly polls, and they can take the time to develop well-researched advice.
They are also a check against government by private sector consultants and other businesses, in my mind an alarming trend.
I admire the appointed senators and am very pleased that they are there to keep these terrible cons from ruining our Canada....Craig is an asshole just like mike duffy all the while hoping they get themselves appointed...
Couldn't they simply divide the senate equally amongst the provinces and equally of political stripes. Simple, easy.
That way there'd be no majority party in the senate. You can't deny the good work they do.
Besides, would you want to leave all decisions and research up to the bimbos we have in parliament now?
