I thought I heard Craig Oliver say on CTV news that Harper told the GG that if she didn't agree to prorogue he would resign. Anyone know if that's the case?
From what I hear, he was there for 2 hours, so there would naturally be more to it then that. And it wouldn't be like he would be putting an ultimatum on her, she made the decision as far as we know, not the pm, not the opposition, not the legal advisors or the public I would argue (how many polls or rallies did she hear about?). If it was the case, he would only let her know what he would do, so she can weigh everything into her decision making. My suspicion.
Right now, it's only God, Harper, Jean, and I guess their respective spouses that know the details I would think.
I am looking forward to their autobiographies though. I discussed that during dinner with my family today.
Yes, I would think so -- I read this too, that in a case where the GG doesn't take the PMs advice, then it pretty well means that the PM has to resign and let the GG decide whether to call an election or ask another leader to form a government.
According to convention in the British Parliamentary system, any time the sovereign refuses a request of the Prime Minister, the PM must immediately resign, so yes, if he followed that convention he would.
