Just for the Record - Alberta is Not the West

Albertans wanted in, they got in and they failed to act like Canadians, so there you go. They had their chance and blew it. Alberta = oil. BC is not Alberta. Alberta is not the West. Everyone needs to learn a bit more about Canadian geography, and for that matter politics. Right now the BC NDP is higher in the polls than the so-called BC Liberals.

Good Post. BC is certainly not Alberta. In fact, I think the differences between those two provinces are expanding. They are certainly not shrinking. And that is in the interior, not simply the lower mainland (i.e. Vancouver & Victoria areas).

Watching BC Premier Gordon Campbell yesterday he said his office was inundated with calls from people who were not too happy with talk of a coalition taking over the Federal Government. That, he said, is why he went on national TV to tell those in Ottawa to take a break, cool off and get back to work. He was hoping for a prorogation of parliament and was not in favour of a coalition.

Next up, we have the following from Simma Holt, ex Lib MP:

The only way the three losers can get power is by total contempt of the Canadian voters–with this Coalition. They jeer and yell across the floor of the House of Commons charging Stephen Harper with only one motive–wanting to hold power. The only sound we hear across the miles is their hysterical demand for their own power–power none of them could get from the voters. Canada did not vote for Stephen Dion as the leader of this country.

I was a Liberal MP in the Government of Pierre Elliott Trudeau 1974-79. But there is no place in the Liberal Party of Canada for a true Grit. Nor is there a place for western Canadinans in this Insane Hysteria from the eternal losers–the NDP, the Bloc, and their chosen leader Stephen Dion — to succeed in this Contemptible Coup.

This cries out to us on the Pacific Rim: “if any part of Canada should separate it is British Columbia.

The contempt of the voters of Canada, and indifference to the economic and political crisis not only of Canada but the world, makes all of these power seekers unfit to service in the Nation’s Parliament…

Simma Holt

Not sure you can say those in the "West" who are mad only means those living in Alberta.

More for the Record: this is what Wikepedia has to say about Ms. Holt

"Born in Vegreville, Alberta, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1944 from the University of Manitoba.

In the 1974 election, Holt was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as the Liberal candidate for the British Columbia riding of Vancouver Kingsway. She was defeated in the 1979 election and the 1980 election."

Born in Alberta, elected once and then defeated twice in Vancouver. Not really a spokesperson for BC. And Campbell, well we all know where his marching orders are coming from.

So, if a person is not actually born in BC, they cannot be a spokesperson for BC? How many spokespeople does that leave then? With one of the highest immigrant populations in Canada and retirees from all over, I would think not many.

As far as your original post goes, not sure what you mean by "Albertans got in". Last I looked, BC elected 22 Conservatives, 9 NDP and 5 Liberals. (Alberta only elected 5 more than BC, 27.) Are you saying BC would be happy with losing 22 people from the government under a coalition? You really aren't making sense...

Well Anonymous I guess it is hard to explain. I can only say when you live in BC, you can see most Albertans coming a mile away.

My personal opinion is that the majority are demanding, cheap, unnuanced, disrespectful of the rules of society and the rights of others, and rough around the edges. They care almost exclusively about getting their own way, and money. Any people that would re-elect a loud-mouthed drunk over and over again are somewhat wanting in class. Any people that would continue to elect premiers that allow the untrammeled destruction of their environment and all its living things for the love of money are unthinking and ignorant. Any people that would spawn the Reform party are not typical of the rest of Canada.

And any people that think it is OK to bash the Quebecers are beyond the pale.

My point about Ms. Holt was that her success in BC was shortlived and that was probably because she had an Albertan approach from her roots.

And finally just because BC'ers voted conservative in many cases does not mean they did so for the same reasons as the Albertans.

Let me get this all down... Albertans are:

Demanding
Cheap
Un-nuanced
Disrespectful
Rough
Drunks
Want their own way
Classless
Unthinking
Ignorant
Beyond the Pale

I hope I got them all. You see, I don't want to miss even one iota of your fabulous vision and wisdom. One can only say, breathtaking...

You are absolutely breathtaking in your ignorance, even bordering on libelous, but definitely poorly educated about the magnificent people of Alberta.

Now you know how the Quebecers feel.

Susan: First of all I hope all those qualifiers you used was to prove a point only. It would be un-Canadian for you to really think so.

Wes: "You are absolutely breathtaking in your ignorance, even bordering on libelous, but definitely poorly educated about the magnificent people of Alberta."
I can only answer to that, that I hope you can see how "libelous" Conservative weasel wording can get. Can I throw in "undemocratic", "coup d'etat", "socialist borderline communist", "separatist" (you may not understand why this one isn't true). Don't even get me started on the rest of the words that I've heard which are NOT coming from official Conservative spokesperson.

Back to Susan: I really hope you were throwing the ball back at "Albertans", just so they would realise who it is they are voting for and supporting.

And as for "Now you know how the Quebecers feel.", I couldn't agree more on that one.
