Can't Help Feeling Sad & Jealous

A whole new world just opened up last night and we're still stuck with the old one. I just can't help feeling sad for our great country on the road to being great no longer and set to have the world see the stark comparison now between us and our southern neighbours. We missed the boat.

While the world celebrated did you see CTV choking on its bile?

Well, yesterday was a positive step forward for the US. But, before you get too down in the dumps about Canada keep in mind 4 states last night decided to carve out homosexuals from equal rights in their state constitutions.

This morning over 18,000 gay and lesbian couples woke up (if they slept at all) to realize the legal recognition of their relationships are yet again in question - voted upon by their fellow citizens.

The US constitution only pledged to work to create a more perfect union. It still isn't there, and Canada is miles ahead on some fronts.

Perspective might help tempter your sadness and jealousy a bit this morning.

I didn't know that, that's awful, and yet Obama specifically mentioned 'gays' in his speech, but I guess there's not too much he can do since it's up to the states, but maybe he can select some supreme court judges when the time comes.

Joseph's right. Even Californians voted to overturn gay marriage. It remains to be seen whether any of these private initiatives will be struck down by the same courts that have already defended gay marriage on constitutional grounds. I would expect that no private initiative or plebiscite can be allowed to contravene constitutional rights and protections. Then again...

By the way Susan, just what did happen with CTV last night? I was watching MSNBC and CNN.

CTV was doing its usual negative framing of questions trying to minimize the win and push McCain - I just flipped by and it was like a gust of bad air. They were doing the same thing this morning about how Obama might not be able to deliver. It was a striking contrast to CNN.

It is a rare state of affairs when Canadians can not take pride in having a PM more progressive and forward looking than the U.S. president. When you think of Trudeau compared to his U.S. counterparts Nixon and Reagan, Chrétien and Martin compared to Bush it is as if the axis of the world has flipped.
