Where is the Opposition?

I'm going to have a go at a few posts that suggest to the Liberals (the ones I used to know and love at least) a few points they might want to make over and over again!! Why a $58 billion deficit??? One of two reasons: gross mismanagement or a massive ploy.

The cuts to the GST - unasked for and for all intents and purposes unwanted - are worth $10 billion a year. The cons have been in power for how long now - four years? That's $30 to $40 billion in lost revenue - that's most of our deficit. I would call that gross mismanagement of our economy - nothing to do with the recession!!

Or a massive ploy - create a deficit that can then be used as an excuse to eliminate all the good things the government has done for the citizens - create the famous smaller government, namely hand governing entirely over to big business.

Either way - is this the bunch we want running our country - into the ground?

I agree, it is a conscious effort to dissemble the "liberal" structures that are in place. I wish that we could figure out why that's okay with the over 50 crowd who are polling in favour of Harper.

Susan,

The party you loved, I voted for promised many things and broke many promised and lost support over many years. It was slow and gradual loss of voting blocks. It was not Martin, Dion, Iffy that are 'solely' responsible for the current 25% national polling results. The 11% lead in female vote for "Mr. Angry" or biggest A$$hole.

The Liberals have failed to hold and keep these voting blocks. Changing leaders, blaming TV ads is not going to fix it.

Many studies published demostrate what went wrong and the results.

I don't think chasing the 2% GST cut is the best angle either.

The Liberals NEED to provide a compelling narrative they are FIT to become the next government.

They need to hold the current government to account and provide alternatives while in opposition.

The current strategy is NOT working. Fire the existing team and don't listen to the blogges who have been parroting 'support' for the wisdom of staying the course.

25% in POP is not the floor. Chasing oversized cheques, wafers, bodybags, calling the gov't racists, bigots is clearly not working.

Ex-Liberal now voting CPC. It is not difficult to understand how many of us have left Liberal Party in the 1990's. The question that needs to be asked is how do we win those voters back.

I think it is because the cons are controlling the message and the Liberals are failing to "oppose". And if it's the media's fault (we all know where CTV stands, for example) then why aren't the Liberals addressing that issue? Professorial one-liners are just not working! Where's the fire and the passion? And if slimey Soudas or Beatle Boy Harper want to make disdaining remarks so be it - they just show themselves for what they are. People want to see a genuine passion for this country. And there is so much ammunition against the cons just lying there waiting to be used!

Susan,

let's be clear I never voted for the PC or Brian Mulroney.

I voted for the Big Red Book and the promise of the Liberal Party.

Many Canadians voted for those same reasons. Many of us withdrew support when they made the same mistakes and repeated similar scandals.

The loss of those voting blocks was slow and gradual. The voters are VERY smart and they are NEVER wrong.

We are not tricked by the bias in CBC, CTV, Toronto Star, National Post articles.

Many of us have tuned out the mainstream for years for their tabloid coverage and lack of serious journalism.

The current government is spending too much money trying to fix too many problems they can't solve.

The auditor general will find problems with EAP, and infrastructure and heads will roll.

We have serious problems with real pollution and needs in our country.

I don't think dumping $ 10.5 in the Big Three, Carbon Sequest $ 1 Billion is well spent taxpayers money.

Susan last year the public (voters) returned the CPC/NDP with more seats to Ottawa.

The message to the LPC is not getting through. Why do you think they lost seats and continue to poll 7-10% below Paul Martin in 2006?

Canadian Sense, I checked out your blog and I must say it's a bit confusing - discussing bed-wetting etc. when our country is at stake seems a bit odd. Your point that nobody's beyond reproach is well-taken but the cons are not just run of the mill politicians, they do not have the best interests of this country and its citizens as their guiding principle. As for bloggers in a panic, that's just spin. I for one actually care about what happens and am expressing that - there's no panic, just great concern.

Susan,

your review on my blog was VERY polite/kind.

You are an exception, I admire it. Curisoty Cat, Red Tory, ottolib, morton musings, EFL -Lib blogs are also sites that don't parrot Liberal HQ 100%.

My blog is not "serious" comment on politics. Just an observer reformed Liberal compliments of John Nunziata boot over GST by Chretien.

Voted independent 2x for John Nunziata after that removal from Liberals.

Alan Tonks was dropped in with help from JC.

My wife would describe it lame satire.( She is very polite too)

My darling wife is NOT interested in politics and is NOT a CPC party apologist.

She is also not a Beatles Youtube convert.

Those Just Visiting Ads for her, the most disturbing FACT was his 34 years away from Canada.

That is enough to disqualify him as PM in her mind.

In 2006 the party including Bob Rae stopped MI from becoming the leader. Bob Rae refused to endorse him and allowed his supporters to push Dion.* That was important.

Warren Kinsella wrote on his blog back then on the reasons why he would not support him and the mistake for Liberals too.* Important again from a strategic perspective.

Flash forward the Polls are reflecting those same observations.

The same Polls are NOT giving the current government a ringing endorsement or a majority as they are sending a message to the Liberal party. The Government is polling with their historical range 35-37% norms.

The Liberals are the only party polling below any historical norm.

The NDP, Bloc and Green are within their normal range.

Why are the Liberal Polling so low?

I refuse to single out the leader and TV ads. It is more complicated.

I don't buy the "scary" CPC hidden agenda thing and if they go nuts we can toss the bums out. My country will not be destroyed by either the Liberals or the CPC.

What did Bob Rae and Warren Kinsella know and think 2006 and why did they not endorse him?

During the leadership race I blogged that if Ignatieff won we would lose the next election and I backed Dion. I did not realize that the right wing Liberals would sabotage Dion. I did not realize how right wing the Liberals could be and that is what I think the problem is. It seems to me that Ignatieff agrees with most of Harper's policies and therefore can't come out against them and that is why the right wing of the party supports him.

The problem is that we have no genuine centre left representation at the federal level. Unionism (NDP), just like big business should not be running the country. For all their problems the Liberals under Chretien governed both to the left and right of centre.

Susan,

I agree most reasonable people don't expect the Federal Governmen to fix problems they can't.

We did not throw out the Liberals after one scandal or one mistake.

I don't think it is about left or right wing idealogy.

The current gov't has been in power for over 1300 days and we are not in trouble because of what the CPC have done or failed to do.

Each opposition tries to blame the sitting government for problems.

Low dollar, rates too high, stock market drop etc.

I prefer a smaller Federal Government that does not stick its nose into provincial jurisdiction.

If you want a park, pool, NHL stadium ask the local taxpayer have the privilege of funding such a worthwhile investment.

Reminds of fees for Airport improvement in Vancouver and Toronto. (Let the user pick up the extra cost)

Our turnout for municipal elections are less than 40% in many cities and if new FEES were being introduced, I am confident those disinterested citizens would start showing up with pitchforks.

The Polls are starting to reflect that sentiment as well. The end of nanny state.

I guess we really are at opposite ends of the spectrum. For many reasons I do see the cons as very dangerous to our country and I do think we need a strong federal government that maintains common programs for people across the country and promotes a strong and unified country. We also need a government that can regain the respect we used to have in the world.

Yes, I would say I discount over 75% of what every political party says.

I did not believe the LPC were going to destroy Canada when they were in power and I don't believe it now the Liberals are repeating it.

The clowns in Ottawa are taking care of each other first and always. It is great club if you can get in, gain benefits and perks. Reminds me of the fake professional wrestling where they on camera pretend to really despise each other but off camera rehearse their matches and dine together.
